To determine the explosive potential of Alfalfa, ext., an assessment was performed by review of the molecular structure (functionality) of the registered substance and the extraction process from alfalfa leaf. The CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 were referred to in order to establish a suitable screening procedure for chemical groups associated with explosive properties within the material. This was achieved, in part, with the aid of criteria outlined in Table A6.1 in Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Test and Criteria.

It was concluded that Alfalfa, ext. does not have explosive properties and does not require classification for explosiveness under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Executive summary:

An expert assessment was undertaken to establish whether the UVCB substance, Alfalfa, ext., possessed explosive properties. This was achieved by reviewing the molecular components and functionality of the registered substance in order to identify possible structural features that are commonly associated with explosive behaviour. Structural motifs described within the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Test and Criteria were examined in conjunction with suitable screening criteria outlined in CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.

C-C unsaturation was found to be present; however, this is not associated with functionality typically linked with explosive behaviour, and the halogens, nitrogen, metals, and oxygen anticipated to be found within Alfalfa, ext. are not contained within chemical groups commonly indicative of explosive behaviour. It has been concluded that Alfalfa, ext. does not possess explosive properties and subsequently, classification under CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 is not required.
