- Effect concentrations exceeding solubility of substance in test medium: No - Reported statistics and error estimates:
- If at least one test concentration caused mortality of greater than or equal to 50% of the test population, then a computer program modified from the program of C. Stephan was used to calculate the LC50 values and 95% confidence intervals. Three statistical methods were available in the computer program: moving average angle analysis, probit analysis, and nonlinear interpolation with 95% confidence intervals calculated by binomial probability.
The 96 hr LC50 for midge was estimated by moving average angle analysis. The 48 hr LC50 for midge was estimated by non-linear interpolation (95% confidence interval calculated by binominal probability). - Validity criteria fulfilled:
- not applicable
- Conclusions:
- The 96 hr LC50 of C12.3 LABS Na (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) to midge (Chironomus riparius) was 6.5 mg active ingredient/L, based on nominal concentration of test substance.
- Executive summary:
The 96 hr LC50 of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (C12.3 LABS Na) to midge (Chironomus riparius) was determined under static conditions. The nominal test concentrations were 0, 1.3, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg active ingredient/L. The mortality of midge was determined at 48 h and 96 h.
Mortality of 5% was observed at the three lowest test concentrations (1.3, 2.5, 5.0 mg/L). Mortality of 95-100% was observed in the two highest exposure levels (10, 20 mg/L) after 96 h. Control mortality was 10%.
The 48 h and 96 h LC50 values were 8.6 and 6.5 mg active ingredient/L, respectively.

Description of key information
No study was available on acute toxicity of the test substance to aquatic invertebrates. Therefore, read across is performed using five studies from the related substance benzenesulfonic acid (LABS Na). The study of Kimerle and Swisher (1977) obtained a 48 hour LC50 of 2.4 mg/L for Daphnia magna. McNamara et al. (1990) obtained a 96 hour LC50 of 6.5 mg/L for the midge Chironomus riparius. McNamara et al. (1990) obtained a 96 hour LC50 of 3.5 mg/L for the amphipod Hyalella azteca. McNamara et al. (1990) obtained a 48 hour and 96 hour LC50 of 2.4 mg/L and 1.8 mg/L, respectively, for the oligochaete Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. Hooftman et al. (1990) obtained 48 hour EC50 of 2.9 mg/L for Daphnia magna.
A worst case approach was applied for chemical safety assessment and the most conservative effect concentration was used (48 hour EC50 of 2.4 mg/L).
