The biodegradation of the test substance sulphonic acid branched alkylate was determined in an OECD 301F ready biodegradability test. Biodegradation was followed for 28 days, using sodium benzoate as a reference substance. The reference substance was 68% biodegraded and met the 10 -day window requirement. Therefore the test results are valid. The test substance was <5% degraded at the end of 28 days. The test substance is not readily biodegradable.

As a supporting study, 11 fish were exposed to 1 mg/L of the test substance for 196 days, with the substance labeled with sulfur-35 in order to determine amount that biodegraded. Results at the end of the test period show that the test substance was 97.8% biodegraded in 196 days. Analysis of the amount of radiolabeled sulfur in the suspended solids and in the fish shows that most of the test substance was removed by biodegradation rather than adsorption or bioaccumulation.
