Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lowest 96 hour LC50 is 2.6mg/l for p-xylene.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Data is available on the acute toxicity of each of the xylene isomers and ethylbenzene to fish. The studies by Galassiet al(1988) and DiMarzioet al(2004) follow OECD 203, whilst Holcombeet al(1987) used a flow through system to expose different species simultaneously. Galassiet al(1988) and Holcombeet al(1987) used a standard test species, whilst DiMarzioet al(2004) tested a non-standard freshwater fish. All studies included analytical confirmation of the exposure concentrations.

The 96hr LC50 results reported from these studies for the different isomers and ethylbenzene are very similar, with a range of 2.6 - 11.23 mg/l. The most conservative result from the individual isomers will be used in the risk assessment.
