Executive summary:

Water solubility of nonan-1 -ol = 69.54 mg/L at 20 °C; determined according to OECD Guideline 105

Description of key information

The water solubility of a commercial sample of nonan-1-ol is 69.54 mg/L at 20°C. It is supported by a value of 128 mg/L at 20 ºC for the pure substance, taken from a reliable reference source for solubility data.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
69.54 mg/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The solubility of 69.54 mg/L was determined in accordance with OECD 105. The result is considered reliable.

It is supported by a value of 128 mg/L at 20 ºC, measured using a slow-stirring method and reported in a reliable reference source for solubility data (Letinski) which is corroborated by a value of 140 mg/l from an IUPAC reference source (Barton).

The value of 128 mg/L at 20 ºC, taken from literature for pure alcohol is used in exposure modelling. All the available reliable results consistently indicate that nonan-1-ol is moderately soluble in water.

Discussion of trends in the Category of C6-24 linear and essentially-linear aliphatic alcohols:

As chain length increases, water solubility decreases, because the free energy required for a molecule to dissolve becomes less favourable for larger molecules.
