Inoculum:
1 - Source:
Activated sludge from the aeration pool of the domestic sewage treatment plant in 67435 Neustadt Wstr., Lachen-Speyerdorf was used as inoculum. Date of taking: March 16th 2004.

2 Handling:
The sludge was aerated continually, washed with and resuspended in mineral medium.
To calculate the amount to be added, the dry weight of the resuspended sludge was determined, giving a value of 4,54 g suspended solids/liter. The volume added to the test flasks responded to a concentration of 25,1 mg suspended solids/liter in the final mixture.

*Experimental Parameters
The test was performed with a start concentration of 20 mg carbon/l (as calculated from the organic carbon content). Each flask contained 1500 ml. Mineral medium as described in the OECD-Guideline was used. Before adding test and reference item, all flasks were aerated for 24 hours with purified, CO2-free, moistened air to purge the system of CO2.
Two blanks, two flasks containing aniline as reference item and two flasks containing test item were prepared. Furthermore, to investigate abiotic degradation, one poisoned flask containing test item (without inoculum), and to test for toxic effects, a flask containing test and reference item were prepared.

The test was started on March 17th 2004. Analyses of emitted CO2 were made on days 2, 5, 7, 9, 13, 20, 28, and 29.

The IC content of the flasks at the beginning of the test was <= 1 ppm (criterion: <= 5% of TC).
The amount of CO2 emitted by the blanks was 25 mg/l (criterion: <= 40).
The difference of replicates was 3 % (criterion: <= 20).
The reference item reached the pass level on day 7 resp. 9. (criterion: <= 14)

A test item is considered readily biodegradable, if the degradation surpasses 60% within 28 days. Degradation must be above 60% at the end of the 10-day-window, though. The 10d-window starts on the day on which degradation reaches 10%.
Thus the test item, must be considered as "readily biodegradable".
The degree of biodegradation reached 95 % after 28 days.
The 10d-window began on day 2, at it’s end, 77% were reached, reaching the pass level of 60% given in the OECD guideline.
The abiotic degradation reached 26 % after 28 days.
Results with reference substance:
The reference item reached the pass level on day 7 resp. 9. (criterion: =< 14)

The percentage biodegradation was calculated from:

Abiotic degradation was calculated from:


% degradation = (mg emitted C (abiotic) / added C in mg)*100


Since the values of day 29 are obtained from the addition of the flasks A and B, an increase (values in flasks B of the test higher than in those of the blank) or a decrease (values in flasks B of the test lower than in those of the blank) of degradation can be observed.


OECD assessment follows the values obtained on day 28
