On the basis of physical observation, the substance p-anisidine was found to be a Light yellow brown powder.

Melting point/freezing point

The melting point determination of Test item p-anisidine (CAS No. 104-94-9) was done as per the test guideline OECD 102. The method followed was according to Capillary/ metal block. The mean melting point range was found to be 49.33°C - 55 °C at 975.66 hPa. For the purpose of chemical safety assessment, the melting point of 55oC has been considered snce the suporting study from an authoritative source mentions the melting point to be 57.2oC.

The density of test itemp-anisidine(CAS No. 104-94-9) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test item was found to be1.180 g/cm3at 20oC and 977.1 hPa

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

The particle size distribution of test item p-anisidine (CAS No. 104-94-9 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was in the range of 150 to 106 microns (micro meter).Thus, it is concluded that the majority of the particle size of the chemical is is not in the inhalable size which is less than 10 microns

Surface activity is a not desired property of the chemical 4-methoxyaniline (p-anisidine) since it is used as an ingredient in hour color and as an intermediate chemical. Thus, in accordance with column 2 of the Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this study was not conducted.

Flash point

The flash point determination of Test itemp-anisidine(CAS No. 104-94-9) was done. The method is closed cup method using Pensky-Martens Flash Point Apparatus. The flashpoint of the test item was found to be 118.6°C at 975.8 hPa.

Auto flammability

The auto ignition temperature of p-Anisidine is reported to be 515°C.

Flammability

Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens is considered to be an authoritative handbook. It mentions the auto flammability temperature of p-anisidine to be 515oC. In addition, the NFPA rating for flammability for p-anisidine is 1.Thus, p-anisidine is not considered to be flammable chemical.

Explosiveness

In accordance with colum 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study was not conducted since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of p-anisidine. Thus, p-anisidine is not considered to be explosive for the purpose of chemical safety assesment.

Oxidising properties

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the chemical p-anisidine is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials, on the basis of the chemical structure (it is an organic substance containing oxygen and no halogen atoms and these elements are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen. Thus, p-anisidine is not expected to exhibit oxidising properties.

pH

The pH of 1% w/v aqueous solution of the test item p-anisidine (CAS No. 104-94-9) was 8.34 at 27 °C indicating that the chemical is basic.
