Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: DIN 55992-1:2006 (Determination of a parameter for the dust formation of pigments and extenders – Part 1: Rotation method)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Principle of test:
The modified Heubach procedure was applied. In the process, the substance sample is mechanically stressed in a rotating drum (dust generation device), and both the dust already contained in this sample and the dust generated due to abrasion are removed from the dust generation device by an air current. The proportion of dust separated and considered as dust with the ability to become airborne is fed into a seven-stage cascade impactor connected to the dust generation device. Particle size classification is conducted by subsequent weighing of the respective dust masses deposited on the individual cascade stages reflecting certain particle size ranges. The “total dustiness” value is determined as the ratio of the mass of removed dust to the total sample mass initially weighed in.

GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
rotating cylinder
Sampling:
- Sampling procedure: In the seven-stage cascade impactor used here the dust was separated into 7 fractions between approx. 0.3 µm and 30 µm.
- Measurement procedure: A scale with a resolution of 0.01 mg (Shimadzu AUW-220D, D-K-17702-01-00) was used to determine the mass of deposited quantities of dust on the individual impactor stages.
- Sample size: 1.04 g

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Total Dustiness (airborne fraction) measured by using the modified Heubach procedure showed a total dustiness value of 241.72 mg/g for Barium Carbonate nano
Executive summary:

Total Dustiness (airborne fraction): 241.72 mg/g.

Mass median aerodynamic diamater of airborne fraction: MMAD = 20.10 µm (distribution fitted to cascade impactor data). Geometric standard deviation of MMAD (GSD) = 3.40.
