Description of key information
Additional information
PTD is an oxidative dye molecule commonly used during hair dye processes / application. In product formulation it function is based on oxidizing and covalently binding to other components of the hair colour formulation – known das dye coupler – to form a colored product which is embedded in the hair matrix. In addition to binding to dye couplers, PTD can oxidize and react with itself to form dimers and trimers of PTD. Given the number of different couplers used, and the potential for formation of dimers and trimers, PTD forms a large number of potential transformation products during product use. PTD stabilizers like ascorbic acid are used to prevent degradation during product formulation process at manufacturing site. Washing and cleaning processes of batch containers and other technical equipment’s at the manufacturing site result in wash water which is disposed to sewage treatment plants. The exposure is described in Specific Environmental Release Categories.
An aerobic sewage treatment simulation study (OECD guideline 303A) was conducted with PTD and showed 93% loss of PTD based on specific analytical measurements. Given the low sorptivity of PTD (Koc 17.5 at pH 6), and the short hydraulic residence time in the test system, 6 hours, it is expected that PTD oxidized and reacted with components of the synthetic sewage feed and the activated sludge in the test system. This data demonstrates that PTD will react with itself, with hair dye couplers, and / or with components of sewage to form a diverse set of unknown reaction products.
