Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Wear PPE when giving first aid. Seek medical advice immediately. In case of breathing difficulties give oxygen. In the event of pulmonary irritation treat initially with corticoid spray (Ventolair or Pulmicort). In case of respiatory standstill give artificial respiration by respiratory bac (Ambu bag) or respirator. Risk of pulmonfary oedema. Treat symptoms. Pulmonary oedema prophylaxis.
In case of contact with skin wash off imediately with plenty of water. Seek medical tratment immediately.
In case of eye contact rinse the eye with water carefully whilde protecting the unhurt eye, call for a doctor immediately. Medical tratment by an eye specialist.
Fire-fighting measures
Use dry powder, carbon dioxide or sand. Unsuitable is water or foam as extinguishing media.
Use breathing apparatus with independent air supply (isolated). Wear full protective clothes.
Accidental release measures
In case of accidental release wear
- full protective clothing,
- breathing apparatus with independent air supply (isolated)
- safety goggles
- chemically resistant gloves (NBR or FKM)
- safety shoes
Keep away sources of ignition. Prevent spread over a wide area. Take up with absorbent material and dispose according to regulation.
Handling and storage
Oxalyl dichloride has to be handled in closed systems. It has to be stored at a cool place in technically leak proof containers like pressure drums or bunghole drums made of steel. The pipework used in the filling plant has to be technically leak proof too. The transfilling shall take place in a closed system. At the end of each filling campaign the residues in the filling plant have to be rinsed by gaseous nitrogen in a gas-tight closed system into a pressure receptacle. After that the filling equipment has to be washed with water and dried. The resulting water does not contain any oxalyl dichloride due to the instant and complete decomposition of oxalyl dichloride to HCl and CO. The waste water has to be disposed for physicochemical treatment in a waste disposal plant. Please find more detials on handling and storage in Section 13 RMM_detail.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Measure the workplace concentration. Occupational exposure limit of hydrogen chloride has to be monitored, because oxalyl dichloride instantly and completely decomposes to HCl and CO in case of contact with humidity/moisture or water.
Personal protection equipment shall be used in case of accidential release of oxalyl dichloride.
Stability and reactivity
Oxalyl dichloride instantly and violently decomposes to HCL and CO in contact with water.
