Description of key information

The effects of the test substance were assessed on soil micro-organisms (nitrogen transformation, OECD TG 216) and soil macro-organisms (earthworms, OECD TG 222) to establish hazard to soil vitality and function. Both studies were conducted under static conditions and the due to the poor solubility of the test substance it was dissolved in acetone prior to being applied to soil with quartz sand as the second vehicle. Since a solvent was used, it is anticipated the results achieved are more conservative than those that would be obtained without the use of a solvent.

The key value for chemical safety assessment was derived from the OECD TG 222 study (NOEC (reproduction) = 93.8 mg/kg dw soil). The chemical safety assessment concluded safe use for the soil compartment, therefore, assessing toxicity to terrestrial plants was scientifically not necessary considering RCRs < 0.5 and the fact in the aquatic studies on the test substance indicated invertebrates as more sensitive to the test substance than plants (micro-algae). Due to the poor water solubility of the substance and its high adsorptive potential to soil and sediment, the effects on terrestrial plants are not expected due to the lack of bioavailability of the substance.
