Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The determination of the surface tension of the test substance sorbic acid was performed according to OECD 115 and EC method A.5 (92/69/EEC).
The test substance was identified as sorbic acid with a purity of 99.8 %. The method used for the determination of the surface tension of sorbic acid in aqueous solution is based on the measurment of the maximum force which is necessary to exert vertically, on a ring in contact with the surface of the liquid being examined placed ina measuring cup, in order to separate it from the liquid surface.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
53.5
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
1 000

Additional information

The determined surface tension of sorbic acid in aqueous solution is 53.5 mN/mat a temperature of 20 °C. thus, the aqueous solultion of sorbic acid has to be considered moderately surface active.
