Description of key information

Since the substance is a quaternary dialkyl-dimethyl ammonium chloride, it exhibits surface active properties. In such a case, the experimental determination of the partition coefficient Kow is difficult and afflicted with errors. Therefore, the Kowwill be presented as the comparison between the measured solubilities in both solvents water and n-octanol respectively. In case of water-solubility the critical micelle concentrations of DTDMAC were used.

n-Octanol solubility: 450 g/L (Clariant report10-87428)
water solubility (cmc): 0.046 g/L (Akzo Nobel report10-0083)
water solubility (cmc): 0.014 g/L (Clariant report10-87428.2)

log Kow= 3.99

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
3.99
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Sánschez Leal, J. et al. (1994) determined the logKow experimentally for DODMAC (CAS-No. = 107-64-2) with 3.8. The value determined (3.99) is in good agreement with the logKOW determined for the DODMAC (CAS-No. = 107-64-2) for which structural similarities to DTDMAC exist. Thus, the value of 3.99 will be used as the key value for theCSA. In addtion, it is known that estimating the n-octanol / water partition coefficient using the quotient of n-octanol solubility and water solubility usually overpredicts the log KOW.
