Endpoint:
auto-flammability
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1999
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Acceptable, well-documented study report which meets basic scientific principles.
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Grewer screening and hot storage test, similar to procedure in VDI 2263 sheet 1
Auto-ignition temperature:
ca. 230 °C
Atm. press.:
ca. 1 013 hPa
Remarks on result:
other:
Relative self-ignition temperature:
ca. 230 °C
Remarks on result:
other:
Remarks:
at atm. press. of ca.1013.0 hPa

The Grewer oven screening showed self-heating to ca. 330 °C starting from 230 °C.

Another self-heating effect appears above 300 °C (max. temp. ca. 430 °C).

The hot storage test revealed weak self-heating.

When stored at 194 °C, the sample reached a maximum temperature of 199 °C 5.1 h (306 min) after temperature equalisation (which occurred 5.7 h after the start of the test).

Conclusions:
The Grewer oven screening showed self-heating at 230 °C. The hot storage test at 194 °C revealed weak self-heating of 5 °C within 25 hours. The test item is not a self-heating solid of UN class 4.2.
Executive summary:

Self-ignition of the test substance was investigated by a Grewer oven screening and a hot storage test. The Grewer oven screening showed self-heating at 230 °C. The hot storage test at 194 °C revealed weak self-heating of 5 °C within 25 hours (270 g test substance).

The test item is not a self-heating solid.

Description of key information
