Remarks:
No Harkins-Jordan correction applied in view of the apparatus used. Once calibrated, the balance and ring assembly give a direct reading for surface tension (within the required accuracy (± 0.5 mN/m)); this is as a result of the reduced ring dimensions.

Sample solution readings:
Several sample readings were taken that during the course of the test were considered to have been incorrectly recorded and have not been reported. Hence, further readings were concurrently performed for confirmation and these are the readings that are reported and used in the determination of the surface tension.

The readings, times and temperatures for the sample solution are shown in the following table:

Mean reading: 54.0 mN/m
Surface tension = reading x calibration factor
= 54.0 x 0.999
= 53.9 mN/m

Temperature: 22.0 ± 0.5 °C
pH of sample solution: 4.0

Determination of sample concentration: Mean sample solution concentration = 0.259 g/L (based on analysis of cationic part)

The hexafluorophosphate counter ion was not individually monitored for.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The surface tension of a 0.259 g/L solution of PF-6 has been determined to be 53.9 mN/m at 22.0 ± 0.5 °C using the ring method. Based on this result is PF-6 considered to be a surface-active substance.
