First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove from exposure and keep patient at rest. Seek medical
attention.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Irrigate eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek
medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash affected areas with water. If irritation or rash
develops seek medical advice.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Wash out mouth with water. Seek medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Water, CO2, powder or foam.

Product arising from burning: Hydrogen bromide, nitrogen and oxides of carbon.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Fire fighters should utilise respiratory equipment and full
personal protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: In the event of a large spill, carefully collect the solid
and transfer to sealed and labelled containers for disposal.
Control dust by damping down with water if necessary, but
do not allow loss of material to drains or watercourses.

Small spills should be carefully collected for disposal and
the affected area wiped with damp cloths to remove residual
traces. Send cloths for disposal with spilt material.

Handling and storage

Handling: Overalls, rubber gloves and protective eye glasses should be
worn when handling the substance. Respiratory protection
should be employed if LEV is not available or is not working
efficiently enough to reduce dust levels.

Storage: Stored in polythene lined fibre-board drums. Store the
containers in a cool, dry place, lids properly closed and
protected from damage by incorrect storage and handling.
Store at ambient temperature remote from sources of heat,
flame or sparks.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: 25 Kg or 100 litre fibreboard drums double lined with 600
gauge anti-static liners.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: None reported.

Chemical reaction with water: Soluble in water resulting in acidic solution (pH 2-3)

Dust explosion: Not expected

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Wasted materials from spills could be recovered and
recrystallised but due to GMP restrictions this may not be
feasible.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Aqueous solutions which are acidic may be neutralised with
sodium hydroxide

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Waste substance should be incinerated. HBr fumes evolved
during incineration should be neutralised.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Aqueous solution should be neutralised and treated with
decolourising charcoal. The charcoal should be incinerated.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable, the substance will not enter the public
domain.
