First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult give oxygen.
If breathing ceases give artificial respiration. If signs
of toxicity occur, seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Flush out eye(s) with copious amounts of water for at least
15 minutes. If irritation persists seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Remove contaminated clothing. Thoroughly wash affected area
with copious amounts of water. If signs of irritation occur
seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Foam

Product arising from burning: Carbon monoxide

Carbon dioxide

Sulphur dioxide

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Standard fire-fighting equipment and self-contained
breathing apparatus should be worn.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: As a minimum precaution an organic vapour respirator with
dust/mist prefilter, chemical safety goggles and butyl
rubber/Neoprene gloves should be worn when cleaning a spill.
A disposable suit and self-contained breathing apparatus
should be worn for cleaning large spills. Sweep material
onto paper. Place in a fibre drum. The spill area should
be ventilated and decontaminated after the material has been
picked up.

Handling and storage

Handling: Safety spectacles/goggles and butyl rubber or Neoprene
gloves should be worn. Local exhaust ventilation should be
used in areas where the substance is handled. NIOSH
approved organic vapour respirators with dust/mist
prefilters should be used. Hands and face should be
thoroughly washed after handling.

Storage: Store in sealed, unbreakable containers in a cool, dry place
away from light.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: Avoid contact with strong oxidisers.

Chemical reaction with water: None known

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: D,L-Ester is consumed in the drug synthesis reaction in
which it is employed. Significant residual levels in
reactor effluent are not expected. No practical method of
recovery or recycling is known.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: No method of chemical neutralisation is known.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Acceptable provided that a closed-cycle incinerator with
scrubbers is employed. National regulations must be
observed.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Basic hydrolysis (pH> 8.0) and subsequent biological
degradation in a waste water treatment plant is recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: Not recommended.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: D,L-Ester is not intended for public use.
