Guidance on Safe Use

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Exposure is not expected by this route, the substance is not

expected to be harmful if inhaled.  If exposure occurs

remove patient to fresh air.

Emergency measure - Eyes: In case of eye contact, immediately irrigate with plenty of

water for 15 minutes.

Emergency measure - Skin: Remove contaminated clothing immediately.  Wear impervious

gloves.  Cleanse skin thoroughly with soap and water.  Do

not omit cleansing hair or under fingernails if

contaminated.  Do not reuse clothing without laundering.  Do

not reuse contaminated leatherwear.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: If quantities greater than 15 cc are swallowed, induce

vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Do

NOT induce vomiting unless directed to by medical personnel.

Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Use water spray, alcohol foam, carbon dioxide or dry

chemical to extinguish fires.  Water stream may be

ineffective.  Use water to keep containers cool.

Product arising from burning: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and/or oxides of phosphorus.

Protective equipment: Wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus

and full fire-fighting protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Where exposure level is not known, wear NIOSH approved,

positive pressure, self contained respirator.  Where

exposure level is known, wear NIOSH approved respirator

suitable for the level of exposure.  To prevent skin contact

wear skin protection, such as impervious gloves, apron, work

trousers, long sleeve work shirt or disposable overalls.

Prevent eye contact by using eye protection such as chemical

splash proof goggles or face shield.  In addition to the

above protective clothing/equipment, wear impervious boots.

Cover spills with some inert absorbent material; sweep up

and place in a waste disposal container.  Flush area with

water.

Handling and storage

Handling: - Utilize in a closed system where feasible.  If the

substance is not used in a closed system, good enclosure and

local exhaust ventilation should be provided to control

exposure.

- In the case of insufficient ventillation wear suitable

respiratory equipment.

- Wear eye/face protection, goggles, and face shield.

- Wear impermeable gloves and suitable protective clothing.

Prevent contamination of skin or clothing when removing

protective equipment

Storage: The substance is not sensitive to light.  Storage above 5°C

is recommended to avoid high viscosity.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Normal storage containers are tight head, high density,

polyethylene drums (210 litres capacity) manufactured by

Hunter Drum, Ontario, Canada.  The drums are made to UN

specifications for packing group II hazardous (corrosive)

liquids and are stamped according to UN regulations.

For small quantities (0.5 to 20 litres), the substance is

packed in UN approved containers (glass or polyethylene) and

is accordance with IATA regulations.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Recommended method of disposal.  Incineration is readily

accomplished by thermal oxidiser/scrubbing to produce carbon

concentrations of sulphuric acid.
