Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Feb 1992
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Study performed according to guidelines and under GLP. No analytical monitoring of substance.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Analytical monitoring:
no
Vehicle:
no
Details on test solutions:
Direct dispersion in de-chlorinated tap water. The substance was known to adsorb to surfaces, so glass vessels were first saturated with substance, by soaking overnight with solution.
Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
Laboratory culture originating from a strain supplied by the Institut National de Recherche Chimique Appliquee, {I.R.CH.A}, France.
Culture: At 21°C in polypropylene vessels containing two litres of dechlorinated and aged tap water. Cultures were fed daily with a suspension of mixed algae {predominantly Chlorella spp.}. Culture conditions ensure that reproduction is by parthenogenesis.
Gravid adults were isolated 24 hours prior to initiation of the test. Young daphnids produced overnight were used for testing.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Total exposure duration:
48 h
Hardness:
50 mg/L as CaCO3
Test temperature:
22 °C
pH:
7.9 - 9.7
Dissolved oxygen:
7.9 - 8.6 mg/L
Nominal and measured concentrations:
3.2, 5.6, 10, 18, 32, 56, 100, 180 and 320 mg/L
Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM
- Test vessel: Glass jars each containing 200 ml test solution and covered to reduce evaporation
- No. of organisms per vessel: 10
- No. of vessels per concentration (replicates): 2
- No. of vessels per control (replicates): 2

OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Adjustment of pH: No
- Photoperiod: 16h light 8 h dark
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
64 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
mortality
Remarks on result:
other: 95% CL 56 - 75 mg/L
Conclusions:
The substance can be considered harmful to Daphnia Magna.
Executive summary:

In a Acute toxicity test according to OECD 202 with Daphnia Magna, a 48 h EC50 of 64 mg/L was observed.

Description of key information

The substance can be considered harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water invertebrates

Fresh water invertebrates
Effect concentration:
64 mg/L

Additional information

In a 48 h acute toxicity study with the substance a EC50 value of 64 mg/L was obtained. For diethanolamine which is a large component of the multiconstituent substance a similar value is available.
