Description of key information

A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of the substance to Daphnia magna under semi-static conditions (renewal period: 24 hours). The study was conducted in accordance with OECD Guideline 202 and following GLP. Groups of twenty daphnids (less than 24 hours old) were exposed for 48 hours to five concentrations of the substance (100, 45.5, 20.7, 9.39, 4.27 mg/L) and an untreated control. The incidence of immobilisation was recorded for each test and control group at 24 hours and at 48 hours. The initial measured content of 3-(hydroxymethyl)nonan-2-one was between 83 and 94 % of nominal and the aged measured content was between 85 and 93 % of nominal. Since the content of 3-(hydroxymethyl)nonan-2 -one in the samples was between 80 and 120 % of nominal the toxicological endpoints were evaluated using nominal test item concentrations. The 48 h EC50 (immobilisation) value for Daphnia magna was determined to be 29.5 mg/L.
