As calibration substances 3-methylbenzoic acid and sulfanilamide were measured. The mean melting point for the 3-methylbenzoic acid was 111.9 °C, which corresponds with the literature value (112 °C) and for sulfanilamide was 164.9 °C also corresponding with the literature value (165.1 °C).

The melting point of the test item at atmospheric pressure was determined to be 142 °C.

Executive summary:

A study was conducted according Regulation 92/69/EWG from 29.12.1992 method A.1 to determine the melting point of the test item using the capillary method. In a preliminary test using a linear heating rate of 10 °C/min the preliminary melting point of the test item was determined. For the main test, a small amount of test item was charged in capillary glass tubes and packed tightly to obtain a filling level of approximately 4 - 5 mm. Three capillaries were prepared. Heating was started from 138 °C with heating rate of 0.5 °C/min. The melting point of the test item was determined to be 142.0 °C at 1013.25 hPa.
