In order to assess the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of the analogous test substance barium dichloride, the test in Daphnia magna was performed according to generally accepted scientific standards and methodology (Biesinger & Christensen, 1972). Ten animals per concentration were exposed for 48 hours in static freshwater.

The nominal/measured test concentrations were not reported for Ba.

Results are based on nominal values, and test did not exactly follow existing guidance, but followed test method well described and test conditions (e.g. test medium composition) were properly identified.

The LC50 was estimated to be 14500 µg/L based on metal ion. For BCZT this would mean a LC50 of 24.62 mg/L. Concerning that barium titanium can be considered as stable and that it is slightly soluble in water biodegradation does not occur as BCZT is inorganic. Bioaccumulation, expressed by determination of log Pow, as well as adsorption/desorption behaviour are not applicable as the determination of the partition coefficient n-octanol/water (log pow = P-value) applies only for organic substances.

Therefore, BCZT does not show a short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.
