First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: Move to fresh air. Consult a physician if irritating symptoms develop and persist.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse immediately with gently running water for 15 minutes, maintaining eyelids open. Consult an ophthalmologist or a physician.
Emergency measure - Skin: Rinse contaminated skin immediately with plenty of water.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: If feeling sick consult a physician.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: Water, foam & dry powder
Product arising from burning: Carbon oxides and Nitrogen oxides.

Protective equipment: The on-site fire crews would tackle any localized fire with a dry powder extinguisher. If a major fire was involved, the foam enhanced building sprinkler system would automatically activate. The building drainage system is arranged such that all fire water run off is captured within a 200m3 catchment tank. The contents of the tank would be analyzed and if required, all of the liquid would be sent for incineration. If there is a risk of fume inhalation, the firemen would wear a Kappler responder gas-tight suit (to standard ASTM F1001 chemical test battery and ASTMF739 Permeation test).
Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: In the event of spillage, the solid will be contained by the use of adsorbent 'pigs' and the use of loose adsorbent vermiculite. Drainage covers would be blanked off and the residues would be wiped, scraped and vacuumed up. All such collections of spilt waste would be securely contained and set for incineration.
Handling and storage
Handling: During the sampling process in the QA Dept., the sampler will wear a Tyvek suit (EN 369/374-3), nitrile gloves (EN388 & EN 374), and a Kemira respirator (EN 12941/2).
During charging, the intermediate vessel is equipped with local exhaust ventilation. Ventilation rates are checked to ensure adequate air flow and hence good levels of containment and control.
The mode of transfer to the reactor is by means of an intermediate bin hoist so that the material is charged to the reactor on dispensation within an enclosed system.
During the charging operation the operator will wear a Tyvek suit (EN 369/374-3), nitrile gloves (EN388 & EN 374), and a Tornado Air pack (filter tested in line with EN149:2001).
All operators are trained regarding the hazards associated with the process - this training is given by the process chemist prior to the start of the campaign. They are also given general training on the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations and PPE awareness training. This training is an important administrative control.
Storage: The enclosed substance will be stored under cover in a warehouse until required for use in the production building.
Only the required amount or one batch will be transferred to the production building at any one time.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The substance will be supplied in 50kg fibreboard kegs with inner polyethylene liners.

Disposal considerations
Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Since it is envisaged that most of the notifiable substance will be consumed in the process, recovery is not applicable.
Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance is a primary amine and therefore basic in chemical nature. It can be chemically neutralized by the addition of a mineral acid e.g. hydrochloric acid to produce the hydrochloride salt. This mode of neutralization would not be attempted.
Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: All process effluent will be contained, not allowed to enter the environment and will be sent for incineration within the UK.
