First-aid measures

DESCRIPTION OF FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation

If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash exposed skin with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Eye contact

Immediately wash with plenty of water, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Continue for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Ingestion

If swallowed, wash out mouth with water. Get medical attention if you feel unwell.

MOST IMPORTANT SYMPTOMS AND EFFECTS, BOTH ACUTE AND DELAYED

To the best of our knowledge the toxicity of this substance has not been fully investigated, thus symptoms and effects are not fully known. Classified as non-hazardous material. No adverse effects are expected if exposed.

INDICATION OF ANY IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION AND SPECIAL TREATMENT NEEDED

Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Fire-fighting measures

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA

Suitable extinguishing media:

Use water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide as appropriate for surrounding fire and materials.

Unsuitable extinguishing media:

No limitations given for this substance.

SPECIAL HAZARDS ARISING FROM THE SUBSTANCE OR MIXTURE

Combustible, but not flammable. In case of fire toxic fumes of carbon oxides (COx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) may be emitted.

ADVICE FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Prevent fire-extinguishing water from contaminating the watercourses.

Accidental release measures

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS, PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Use recommended personal protective equipment during removal of spillages.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS

Do not let the substance enter into drains.

METHODS AND MATERIAL FOR CONTAINMENT AND CLEANING UP

Moisten the spill prior to sweeping up. Keep in closed suitable container and hold for waste disposal. Ventilate area and wash spill site with water after material pickup is complete.

Handling and storage

PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE  HANDLING

Avoid breathing dust or vapors. Handle in well ventilated areas. Use recommended personal protective equipment.

CONDITIONS FOR SAFE STORAGE, INCLUDING ANY INCOMPATIBILITIES

Store in a dry and cool place. Do not store at temperatures above 25°C. Keep the container tightly closed.

Exposure controls / personal protection

CONTROL PARAMETERS

To the best of our knowledge, established occupational exposure limit values are not available.

Recommended Occupational Exposure Limit Value:

Substance             Value                          Control Parameters       Comments

2-(Thienyl)ethyl-4-                 5mg/m3                               LTEL 8h                              In-house limit.

toluenesulfonate

LTEL: Long-term exposure limit (8 hour TWA (time-weighted average))

EXPOSURE CONTROL

Appropriate engineering controls

Use appropriate controls (e.g. containment, local exhaust ventilation) as specified in a workplace risk assessment. Technical measures and appropriate operations should be given priority over the use of personal protective equipment. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Personal protective equipment

Eye face protection       Wear safety glasses with side shields. An emergency eyewash station should be available.

Skin protection       Handle with gloves. The selected gloves must comply with the specifications in EC Directive 89/686/EEC and the related standard EN374 or applicable federal, state and national legislation.

Protective clothing       Use impervious, disposable clothing to prevent skin contact. The type should be selected according to concentrations, quantities and duration of handling at the specific workplace. In dust generating operations wear disposable coverall.

Respiratory protection       Required when dust or vapors are generated. Choice of respiratory protection should be appropriate to the task and the level of existing engineering controls. Use air-purifying respirator with combination filters for routine powder handling in process scale. In laboratories, use fume hood or laminar flow booth.

Environmental exposure controls       Do not release into drains.

Stability and reactivity

REACTIVITY

No known reactivity hazards under normal conditions.

CHEMICAL STABILITY

The substance is chemically stable at temperature conditions below 25°C.

POSSIBILITY OF HAZARDOUS REACTIONS AND CONDITIONS TO AVOID

No known hazardous reactions, but avoid temperatures above 25°C for product quality reasons.

INCOMPATIBE MATERIALS

Strong oxidants.

Hazardous decomposition products

Carbon oxides (COx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) may be formed.

Disposal considerations

WASTE TREATMENT METHODS

Dispose waste at authorized plant, in accordance with Directive 2008/98/EC and/or applicable federal, state, national or local legislation.
