Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity data of barium dilaurate are not available. Read-across to the assessment entities soluble barium substances and lauric acid is applied for the assessment of barium dilaurate since the ions of barium dilaurate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data are available for soluble barium substances and lauric acid (i.e. C12 fatty acid) indicate that the moiety of ecotoxicological concern are barium cations. A reliable, nominal 48h-EC50 of 14.5 mg Ba/L was derived. Aquatic toxicity data of lauric acid point to a low toxic potential to aquatic invertebrates. The ecotoxic potential of the fatty acid chain, i.e. laurate, is assumed to be negligible. Fatty acids are generally not considered to represent a risk to the environment, which is reflected in their exclusion from REACH registration requirements (c.f. REACH Annex V (Regulation (EC) No 987/2008)).

Thus, barium dilaurate is expected to have a low potential for acute toxicity to invertebrates.
