Description of key information

The 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical) is not considered as having oxidizing properties.

Additional information

The oxidizing property of 4-Amino-m-cresol (source chemical) was evaluated by following the EU Method A.17 (Oxidizing Properties (Solids)).

The test material was mixed with the dried cellulose in following 9 different ratios:

10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20 and 90/10.

The mixture was formed into a 250 mm pile placed onto a stainless steel plate and the pile was ignited at one end by a Bunsen's burner flame.

The maximum burning rate (0.72 mm/sec) was achieved with barium nitrate (reference material) mixed with dried cellulose in the proportion 40 to 60 (w/w).

For all the mixtures (test material/cellulose) the combustion does not propagate when the Bunsen's burner flame was approached. The 4-Amino-m-cresol does not have oxidising properties. By applying a read-across between the 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical) and the 4-Amino-m-cresol (source chemical), the 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical) is not considered as having oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical) is not considered as having oxidizing properties, based on the results of an oxidizing test performed on an analog, 4-Amino-m-cresol
