Conclusion on classification

The substance 2,5-xylenol (EC No 202 -461 -5) is listed on Annex VI of the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) with Index No 604-006 -00 -X and therefore the following harmonised classification is set as minimum classification*:

Acute Tox.3 * H311
Acute Tox. 3* H301

Skin Corr. 1B H314

Aquatic Chronic 2 H411

The harmonised classification as Aquatic Chronic 2 is supported by the findings of the aquatic toxicity tests. Based on a 96-hour LC50 value, a 48-hour EC50 value and a 72-hour ErC50 value of 5 - 5.7 mg/L, which were calculated from OECD guideline studies with the test item 2,5-xylenol on acute aquatic toxicity in fish (Oryzias latipes), crustaceae (Daphnia sp.) and green alga (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) respectively and taking into account that the substance has been determined to be not readily biodegradable, it is proposed that the test substance has to be classified according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 as toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (Category 2, H411).
