The melting temperature is defined as the temperature at which the phase transition from solid to liquid state takes place at normal atmospheric pressure. This temperature ideally corresponds to the solidification or freezing temperature.

Preliminary Test

Starting at 225°C, the weight of the sample decreased significantly. At 291°C, the sample weight had decreased by 25%.

After the experiment, a black charred residue remained in the sample container (original colour: grey). The change of the colour indicated reaction and/or decomposition of the test item.

Main Study

An endothermic peak was observed between 100°C and 175°C followed by a broad endothermic effect starting at 200°C. The extrapolated onset temperature of the first peak was 141.252°C. The endothermic effect was most likely obtained due to melting of the test item. The second endothermic effect was probably obtained due to reaction and/or decomposition of the test item.

After the experiment, a black charred residue remained in the sample container (original colour: grey). Based on this visual observation, it was found that the test item reaction and/or decomposition of the test item.

In order to investigate the melting peak, Experiment 2 was stopped directly after the melting peak. The extrapolated onset temperature was 141.060°C. After the experiment, an orange brown molten residue remained in the sample container (original colour: grey). Based on this visual observation, it was found that the test item had molten and the change of the colour demonstrated reaction and/or decomposition of the test item.

The melting temperature was determined as the mean melting temperature of Experiment 1 (141.252°C) and Experiment 2 (141.060°C).

The melting temperature ofthe test itemwas 141.2°C (414.3K).Reaction and/or decomposition of the test itemwas observed during melting at the DSC experiments. Boiling of the test item was not observed below the temperature at which reaction and/or decomposition started. Based on this, the test item has no boiling temperature

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The melting temperature of the test item was 141.2°C (414.3K).

Reaction and/or decomposition of the test item was observed during melting at the DSC experiments. Boiling of the test item was not observed below the temperature at which reaction and/or decomposition started. Based on this, the test item has no boiling temperature.
Executive summary:

The melting temperature of NBTRI was determined by DSC. The melting temperature of the test itemwas 141.2°C (414.3K).

Reaction and/or decomposition of the test item was observed during melting at the DSC experiments.
