Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

non explosive

Additional information

According to the REACH Regulation (EC n. 1907/2006) Annex VII, Column 2 the study does not need to be conducted if the organic substance or a homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C.

In the thermal investigation of the test substance, it shows a decomposition energy of 282.1 J/g and an onset at 286.8 °C, which satisfies the above criteria.

Therefore, the substance is exempt from testing for explosiveness.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the definition set out in the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) an explosive substance or mixture is a solid or liquid substance or mixture of substances which is in itself capable by chemical reaction of producing gas at such a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as to cause damage to the surroundings. Pyrotechnic substances are included even when they do not evolve gases. Since the substance has an exothermic decomposition energy less than 500 J/g and an onset of exothermic decomposition below 500 °C the test was not conducted and the substance is considered as not explosive.
