Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Disodium oxide (n°CAS 1313 -59 -3) in contact with water, being quasi-instantaneously degraded according to the reaction:

Na2O + H20 -> 2NaOH

Considering the high reactivity with water of the parent substance (half life of Na2O < 1 hour), the disodium oxide can be considered as a hydrolytically unstable substance justifying a non-testing decision for the tests related to its environmental fate and pathways.

Furthermore, the degradation product is well known (sodium hydroxide - n°CAS 1310 -73 -2) and has been widely investigated (European RAR available for NaOH, NaOH SIEF). Therefore, there is no lack of information on the degradation products and no further testing is necessary on them.
