Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

7 -day test on aquatic plants: in progress

Additional information

As no data on target substance was available, a read across approach with Similar Substance 01 was used. Target and read across substance have exactly the same chemical structure and they only differ in the type of salification of 2 sulphonic acid groups. In particular, target substance is a sodium and potassium salt, while read across substance is a disodium salt. Moreover, the 2 substances have the same impurities profile, mainly water and inorganic salts.

Differences in the type of salification are not expected to significantly influence the physicochemical properties, thus the read across is considered as acceptable and reliable for the assessment. Details on the read across are available in section 13.

The assessement on aquatic toxicity was based on experimental studies on fish, aquatic invertebrates and plants. At 20 °C, Similar Substance 01 has a solubility in water of 26.62 g/l and a logPow of -1.8530; it is not ready biodegradable.

Short-term toxicity to fish

Upon a preliminary test, a 96 -hour study on fish was conducted as limit test with nominal concentrations of 100 and 0 mg/l. No analytical monitoring was done, thus results were expressed as nominal concentrations. Mortality was seen and allowed to identify a LC20 of 100 mg/l and a LC50 > 100 mg/l.

Such result was confirmed by another study on fish, for which no details on test procedure and results were available.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Acute toxicity to daphnia magna was assessed in a 48 -hour study at concentrations up to 1000 mg/l. A preliminary test was run to select concentrations for the main assay. No analytical monitoring was done, thus results were expressed as nominal concentrations. Effects on mobility were seen and led to identify an EC50 = 235 mg/l.

Toxicity to aquatic plants other than algae

In progress.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), the threshold of classification of a substance for acute aquatic toxicity is 1 mg/l. This limit is compared with LC50 (96h ) for fish, EC50 (48h) for daphnia, EC50 (72 -96 h) for algae and EC50 (7 d) for other aquatic plants.

As for chronic toxicity, in case of lack of chronic data, the toxic potential is identified by appropriate combinations of acute toxicity data and lack of biodegradability. The threshold of classification is 100 mg/l.

Available EC50 values on fish and daphnia indicate a low aquatic toxicity of test substance, implying no classification for both acute and chronic toxicity within the CLP Regulation (EC 12727/2008). However, a final decision on classification will be drawn, once the study on aquatic plants will be available.
