Flammability: flammable liquid Category 2

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
flammable

Additional information

The flammability of liquids is assessed on the basis of flash point.

There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air). However, in contact with water; the substance reacts slowly to form triethylsilanol and hydrogen, Although, the reaction produces a flammable gas, hydrogen, it does not occur instantaneously and the gas is not produced sufficiently rapidly to require classification for flammability in contact with water. This assertion is supported by measured hydrolysis data where the half-life of triethylsilane was determined to be 377 hours at 25°C.

Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Triethylsilane is classified according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 as Flam. Liq. 2, H225: Flammable Liquid and Vapour on the basis of a measured flash point of -5°C and boiling point of 100 -109°C.
