Iterative testing was used to identify a flash/no flash result at -20, -25 and -30°C. In each case, a flash was detected. The lower limit of the method and instrument is -30°C, so no further attempts were made at lower temperatures. Since we cannot confirm if the material will flash below -30°C, we report that the actual value at or below -30°C.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

The flash point of vinyltrimethylsilane (Lot# M3M02DMV, 99.57% pure) was determined using a Closed Cup Flashpoint Rapid Tester (Model RT-1) in accordance with Method A of ASTM D3828 (Standard Test Methods for Flash Point by Small Scale Closed Cup Tester) using a 2mL sample volume. The sample cup was cooled to at least 5°C below each target temperature using liquid nitrogen, was then allowed to reach equilibrium, and then was allowed to warm to the target temperature without added heat. The syringe and sample were cooled to at least 10°C below the test temperature by immersion in a sand bath that was cooled with liquid nitrogen.
