Additional information

A number of reliable studies plus supporting information are available in multiple species for the acute oral and inhalation toxicity of 2,4 -Xylidine. The lowest reliable oral LD50determined was 1259 mg/kg bw for male Osborne-Mendel rats. The LC50 (4-hour) for 2,4-Xylidine was established at 1.53 mg /L. All results are shown in the “Short description of key information” field

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the findings described above (LD50 oral in rats 1259 mg/kg bw, LC50 inhalation in rats1.53 mg/L) 2,4 -Xylidine has to be classified as

- acute orally toxic: Xn, R22 - harmful if swallowed; Hazard category 4, H302 - harmful if swallowed

- toxic by inhalation: T, R23 - toxic by inhalation; Hazard category 2, H330 - fatal if inhaled

according to the criteria laid down in the EU Dangerous Substances Directive (67/548/EEC) and in the EU Classification Labelling and Packaging Regulation (1272/2008/EC).

For precautionary reasons the annex VI classification to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

- acute orally toxic: T, R25 - toxic if swallowed; Hazard category 3, H301 - toxic if swallowed

- acute dermal toxic: T, R24 - toxic in contact with skin ; Hazard category 3, H311 - toxicin contact with skin

is followed.
