Redwood Viscometer No. -1

Principle of method

The flow of test item under gravity through a capillary using Redwood Viscometer No. 1

Temperature at which the testing was done

20°C and 40°C

Observations

Time taken to fill 50ml flask at 20°C in ‘Sec’ (Mean Value)

112.3 sec

Time taken to fill 50ml at 40°C flask in ‘Sec’ (Mean Value)

CALCULATIONS:

ν= ct----------------------------------------- (i)

Where,ν= Kinematic viscosity

c= Viscometer constant

t= time of flow in seconds (Redwood second) For Redwood Viscometer- I, the values for the constants are as

below:

Time of flow, t

C

40 to 85 seconds

85 to 2000

0.247

ν= η/ρ------------------------------ (ii)

Where, ν= Kinematic viscosity

η= Dynamic viscosity

ρ= Density of fluid

1.Calculation of Kinematic Viscosities:

For Test Temperature at 20°C

ν=ct

= 112.3 × 0.247sec

= 27.7381mm²/sec

For Test Temperature at 40°C

ν=ct

= 96.6 × 0.247sec

= 23.8602 mm²/sec

2.Calculation of Dynamic Viscosities:

For Test Temperature at 20°C

ν= η/ρ

27.7381 =η 1.1058

η = 27.7381 x 1.1058

= 30.6727 mPa.S

For Test Temperature at 40°C

ν= η/ρ

23.8602 =η/ 1.1058

η = 23.8602 x 1.1058

= 26.3846 mPa.S

Conclusions:
Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of test chemical at 20°C and 40°C was determined to be 27.7381 mm²/sec & 23.8602 mm²/s and Dynamic viscosity of the test chemical was calculated to be 30.6727 mPa.S & 26.3846 mPa.S at 20°C and 40°C, respectively.
