Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Tested according to official UN-method and EU test method A.14
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Three Koenen tests at 6 and at 2 mm should be carried out. However, since a Modified Trauzl test was performed first and was NO, three Koenen tests at 1 mm were carried out as a worst case. This does not reduce the reliability of the final conclusion.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual Tests and Criteria, Third revised edition.
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
no
Other quality assurance:
other: ISO 9001
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Special handling is required for the pyrophoric TEB.
Samples for the tests were prepared in the glovebox in an inert nitrogen atmosphere. The samples for the Impact and Koenen tests were transferred in PE-bags, the bags were
closed and transferred to the apparatus. The time in between sample preparation and testing was as short as possible.
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
Key result
Parameter:
thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: limiting diameter (mm)
Remarks on result:
not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement
Key result
Parameter:
other: Modified Trauzl
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)

DSC

DSC scans are performed on two samples of TEB. Scan attached.

Sample cup: Stainless steel Seiko; closed

Start temperature: 25 oC

Scanning rate: 2 oC/min

End temperature: 490 oC

Intakes: 14.29 mg and 12.61 mg

Impact sensitivity tests

Six tests were carried out at 40 J. No explosion, that means neither flames nor reports, were observed. The tests were carried out with a 10 kg hammer at a distance of 0.4 meter. Result impact sensitivity test: Low (negative reaction at 40J)

Koenen tests (SHV test)

Koenen tests were carried out with orifices of 1 mm (in triplo). No explosions, even no deformations, of the tubes were observed. Time from start heating to the first venting, measured in the test with 1 mm vent, is approximately 15 s, the duration of the venting is 20 s. A green flame was observed during the test, this is typical for TEB. No deformation of the tube means that the maximum pressure during heating TEB in the tube was far below the bursting pressure of the tube.

Test results of the Koenen test

Orifice (mm)  Intake (g)  Result (pos/neg)  Type of fragmentation  t1 time (s)  t2 time (s)
1 18.5 Neg. O 15 21
1 18.5 Neg. O 15 20
1 18.5 Neg. O 13 20

Result “O” in the column of “Type of fragmentation” means that no deformation of the tube was observed. This is according to the definition of the UN (Ref. 5.1)

The definition of the test result according to the EU directive is “no explosion”. Time t1 in the next column is the time from starting the burners till the first visual effect. Time t2 is the duration of the venting effect. The effect of the Koenen test: No explosion.

Modified Trauzl test

Modified Trauzl tests on TEB were carried out according to the UN.

Three tests have to be carried out, with 6 gram of TEB.

The mean net expansion of the lead blocks was 1.04 mL

This is classified as a Result “No”.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Remarks:
non-explosive
Conclusions:
Results on the explosive properties of TEB are:
- Impact: : No explosion observed
- Koenen steel tube: : No explosion observed with 1 mm vent: fragmentation type “O”
- Modified Trauzl: : No

Based on these test results, it is concluded that TEB will be classified as a product with no explosive properties.
Executive summary:

Based on these test results, it is concluded that TEB will be classified as a product with no explosive properties.
