Description of key information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation ,the chemical Tetrabutylammonium iodide was observed to be off white colored crystalline powder in appearance.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of Tetrabutylammonium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting Point range was determined to be 139.6 - 142.7°C at 976.7hPa.

Boiling point:

The boiling point determination of Tetrabutylammonium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was determined to be 145.3°C at 976.4 hPa

Density:

The density of Tetrabutylammonium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4) was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the method recommended in the International Pharmacopoeia, fourth Edition, 2014. The mean pour density and mean tapped density of the substance Tetrabutylammonium iodide was determined to be 0.572 g/cm³ and 0.606 g/cm³ at 28.0°C and 976.9 hPa.

Particle Size Distribution:

The particle size distribution of test item Tetrabutylammonium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.

Vapor Pressure:

MPBPVP v1.43 was used to estimate the vapor pressure of Tetrabutylammonium iodide. The estimated vapor pressure of  Tetrabutylammonium iodide at 25 deg C was 1.81E-007 Pa.

Partition Coefficient:

The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of Tetrabutylammonium iodide(CAS No.311-28-4) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to estimated Pow range of the test substance and generalized calibration graph was prepared. The reference substances were chosen having Pow value ranging from 0.5 to 4.9. The Log Pow value was determined to be 0.8688 ± 0.02653 at 25°C.

Data from various authoritative databases suggest that the estimated logPow of Tetrabutylammonium iodide was 1.71.

Based on these values,Tetrabutylammonium iodide can be considered to be hydrophillic in nature.

Water Solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item Tetrabutylammonium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 and by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The water solubility was determined to be 3247.26 mg/L at 28°C.

Data from authoritative database indicates that tetrabutylammonium bromide was slightly soluble in water at 20degC.

Data from authoritative databases suggest that the estimated water solubility of Tetrabutylammonium bromide at 25 deg C was 163.2 mg/l.

These values indicate that Tetrabutylammonium iodide can be considered soluble in water.

The study does not need to be conducted bacause based on structure, surface acitivity is not expected or cannot be predicted.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of N,N,N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide (CAS No. 311-28-4) was done following closed

cup method using Abels flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determined to be 97°C at 976.3 hPa.

Autoflammability:

N,N,N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that N,N,N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

N, N, N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that N, N, N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus N, N, N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide was considered non-flammable.

Explosivenss:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties except nitrogen and halogen atom which does not contribute to explosive property of a chemical.

Oxidising properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

The pH determination of test item N,N,N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide (CAS No 311-28-4) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v solution was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 5.94 at 27 °C.Based on the value, the

N,N,N-tributylbutan-1-aminium iodide(CAS No 311-28-4) was considered to be neutral in nature.
