Description of key information

Cyanogen chloride is extremely volatile from water surfaces and hydrolyzes rapidly. Under alkaline conditions, the substance reacts to CNO(-) and forms hydrochloric acid and cyanic acid (1/3). Cyanogen chloride is unstable in raw surface waters; half-lives ranging from 1 minute 45 seconds to 10 hours at 5 deg C in ambient waters (2) and 5.25 hrs at pH 8 at 20 deg C(3) have been reported. Hydrolysis Rate constant at pH 7 is about 4 X 10-3 mols-1sec-1.
