Description of key information

In contact with water, AlN undergoes hydrolysis (t½ = 1320 h), forming various poorly soluble aluminium species and ammonia. For the assessment of the aquatic toxicity potential effects of all these hydrolysis products have to be evaluated. The compound AlN will not persist in aqueous solution hence the evaluation of adverse effects of AlN to the aquatic compartment should resort to the transformation products in a read-across approach.

The concentrations of total ammonia are considered for aquatic risk assessment.

In summary, all relevant information on aquatic toxicity various water soluble aluminium salts and ammonia was evaluated in the risk assessment of AlN.
