Short-term toxicity of quinic acid and the read across substances salicylic acid and shikimic acid to invertebrates Daphnia magna:
Quinic acid was tested in a static Daphnia magna, Acute Immobilisation Test according to the OECD Guideline 202 for 48 h. Five nominal concentrations between 312.5 and 5000 mg/L were used. Daphnids did not show any adverse effects (including abnormal behaviour) in the controls and test concentrations. The NOEC of quinic acid is >= 5000 mg/L.
Further, in the study, published by Henschel, 1997 the EC50 of the read across substance salicylic acid for Daphnia magna was determined in fresh water for 48 h according to OECD Guideline. The EC50 of salicylic acid is 118 mg/l. In the publication of Sanderson 2009, the LC50 of the read across substance shikimic acid for Daphnia magna is given. The LC50 of shikimic acid is 116 mg/L.
Short-term toxicity of quinic acid to algae:
The toxicity to green algae Microcystis aeruginosa was determined with an algal assays. The determined NOEC of quinic acid for green algae is >10 mg/L. Quinic acids showed no inhibitory effects. It is considered as harmful according to EU criteria and does not need to be classified. In the publication of Sanderson 2009, the EC50 of the read across substance shikimic acid for algae is given. The EC50 of shikimic acid is >100 mg/L. From these results we consider that the EC50 of quinic acid is >100 mg/l, too.
