- Name of activity / technique:
- Lead metal powder production is a highly specialised process that employs gas atomisation of molten lead using a jet of high temperature gas in in dedicated equipment not available to manufacturers of lead metal massive or those involved in the production of lead-containing articles. The lead can be introduced into the gas stream in the same direction as the gas flow, by use of an annular nozzle, or the molten lead can be dripped into a perpendicular stream of gas. Nitrogen or argon are the commonly used gases as the metal powder must not interact with air for fear of explosions and to negate the formation of metal oxides. The first method produces finer lead powder. In a typical lead metal powder manufacturing process, the lead is melted in a crucible, the liquid metal flows out of a hole, of precise dimensions, in the bottom of the crucible and more molten metal is added to maintain a constant level – this will ensure a constant rate of flow through the hole in the bottom of the crucible. The metal flows into a gas jet that has been heated to about 200oC and is dispersed into small particles up to a few microns in size.
Lead metal powder production is carried out only by specialised powder manufacturing companies and it is substantively different to the normal production process for massive lead ingots (pouring of molten lead into moulds) or products generated from ingots (by rolling, extrusion, pressing, stamping, etc.). - Environmental release category (ERC):
