Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Ethyl vinyl ether is acutely harmful to algae

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One study on the toxicity of ethyl vinyl ether to aquatic algae is available. The study testing the toxicity of ethyl vinyl ether to Desmodesmus subspicatus was performed in compliance with OECD guideline 201 in an open system. An EC50 >1000 mg/l related to the algae growth rate was detected after 72 hours (Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, 1989). Since the study was performed in an open system the data for toxicity assessment are obtained from a study investigating the toxicity of an analogue substance, Isobutylvinylether, to Desmodesmus subspicatus. The study was performed in a closed system set up according to OECD guideline 201. Based on the algal growth rate an EC50 of 45.9 mg/l was determined at test termination after 72 hours (BASF AG, 2004).
