The substance oligomerisation and alkylation reaction products of 2-phenylpropene and phenol [EC no. 700-960 -7] (previous name: Phenol, methylstyrenated, CAS no. 68512 -30 -1) is a poorly soluble liquid mixture mainly consisting of dimeric and trimeric phenolic and aromatic compounds. The acute aquatic toxicity data have been related to the loadings that result in a toxic water-accommodated fraction.
Daphnia tests (OECD TG 202) have been conducted with three resin types of the category: The EL50 values are 14, 17, and 51 mg/L.
An alga test (OECD TG 201) and a fish test (OECD TG 203) conducted with one and the same resin product resulted in an ErL50 of 15 mg/L and LL50 of 25.8 mg/L, respectively.
No inhibition of microbial proliferation was observed in an activated sludge respiratory inhibition test according to OECD TG 209.
No information about aquatic long-term effects is available. Thus, the PNECs have been derived from acute toxicity according to the Guidance of Information Requirements, R.10.
Conclusion on classification
The substance oligomerisation and alkylation reaction products of 2-phenylpropene and phenol (phenol, methylstyrenated) requires classification for environmental hazards, based on experimental evidence:
According to Directive (EU) 67/548/EEC to be labelled with R52/53 (harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) and according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 to be labelled with H412 (Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects), Category Aquatic Chronic 3.
