Description of key information

Orange oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) typically consisting for 80% of d-limonene and a range of minor constituents. All known constituents, comprising 96% of the composition of this NCS, are in the category of readily biodegradable substances. Representative samples of Orange oil proved to be readily biodegradable (OECD 301B).

Thus Orange oil is classified as a readily biodegradable NCS. Based on the ready biodegradability of the NCS, simulation tests in surface water, sediment and soil are not required in accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX. A simulation test will provide little additional information since rapid mineralisation in the environment is already assumed. In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex IX, further degradation testing does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment does not indicate a need for further investigation.
