Description of key information
There are no specific test data available concerning carcinogenicity. However, sebacic acid (CAS 111-20-6), disodium sebacate (CAS 17265-14-4) or the structural analogue adipic acid (CAS 124-04-9) were not mutagenic in "in vitro" and "in vivo" assays. Furthermore, there is no evidence from chronic (six-months) repeated dose studies with disodium sebacate in two species (rat and rabbit) that the substance is able to induce hyperplasia and/or pre-neoplastic lesion. In a limited two-year chronic study in rats with the analogue substance adipic acid, no tumors were observed up to the highest tested concentration of 750 mg/kg bw/d for females and 3750 mg/kg bw/d in male rats. Consequently, and for the sake of animal welfare, the conduct of carcinogenicity testing is not warranted.
