Description of key information

Nickel Nitrate is classified as having oxidizing properties.

The criteria for packaging group III given in the UN Transport Manual of Tests and Criteria (UN, 1999) require that the mean burning time for a 4:1 or 1:1 sample-to-cellulose ratio (by mass) exhibits a mean burning time equal to or less than the mean burning time of a 3:7 mixture (by mass) of potassium bromate and cellulose (and the criteria for packaging groups I or II are not met).

As cited in the 2008/2009 EU Risk Assessment for nickel nitrate, the test result given in the Manual for nickel nitrate is 101 s, which is just higher than the limit for classification in class 5.1 (100 s for a 3:7 potassium bromate sample). This result is reported as negative (“Not 5.1"), which implies that the substance as tested did not belong to class 5.1 (UN, 1999) and should not be classified.

However, according to the CLP classification, nickel nitrate is classified as a Category 2 Oxidizing Solid. In the absence of any additional data to provide further evidence that the substance is not oxidising, the CLP classification will be accepted. Thus, nickel nitrate is indicated to have oxidizing properties.
