Description of key information

Dissociation is defined as being the reversible splitting into two or more chemical species which may be ionic (OECD guideline 112). The dissolution process of MMVF note Q fibres is a non-reversible leaching of inorganic species into water. The inorganic ions are not able to recombine into the original non-dissociated glass state. The leached species are naturally occurring compounds in drinking water.

MMVF note Q fibres are inorganic mineral fibres which are slightly water soluble through the non-reversible leaching of inorganic species. The species dissolved in water are ionic. They are not able to combine back into the original non-dissociated glass state.

It is noted that Kdis (the dissolution constant) reported in this dossier in connection to the toxicological assessment of the MMVF note Q fibres is a parameter used to determine the ability of the fibres to break down (dissolve) into smaller fragments in the human body, which should be considered as separate data.
