Individual constituents of TOP (=Tall Oil Pitch) have specific and different physico-chemical, environmental

fate and toxicity properties. As a consequence the concentrations of each constituent in an

environmental compartment and its capacity to cause effects on the biota will be a unique

function of its properties. However, for practical purposes it is possible to group or “block” (A block may consist of a single constituents or a large number of constituents with similar environmental fate

and distribution properties) constituents having similar physico-chemical properties and environmental degradation

potential and thereby simplify the assessment of a complex substance such as TOP.

The blocks have been defined in terms of composition and also the ‘PBT’ criteria (Persistent,

Bioaccumulative and Toxic) and vPvB (very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative), partly

because PBT assessment has to be made for REACH, and partly because they are useful

On the basis of screening data, the possibility that TOP contains ‘PBT’ or ‘vPvB’ constituents

cannot be excluded; this topic will require further investigation. A justification is being drafted and should be available Q4 2020 or Q1 2021.
