Endpoint:
melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Remarks:
Only one measurement was made during the DTA.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: DIN 51004 (2006) " Determination of melting temperatures of crystalline materials using differential thermal analysis"
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:

Remarks:
Differental Thermal analysis
Key result
Melting / freezing pt.:
> 1 000 °C

The sample shows three termal events from 25 to 1000°C:

(1) Exothermic thermal event located around 230°C (onset 215°C) which correspond with the combustion of a very minor proportion of organic matter.

(2) Exothermic thermal event located around 590°C (onset 390°C) which is supposed to correspond to Co2O3 oxidation to Co3O4.

(3) Endothermic thermal event located around 925°C (onset 908°C) which is supposed to correspond to Co3O4 reduction to CoO.

Conclusions:
The sample shows three termal events from 25 to 1000°C. However, no thermal events related to pigment melting were recorded, which is consistent with the expectation of a melting point above 1400°C.

Description of key information

The melting point of the substance Olivine, cobalt silicate blue is > 1000 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The pigment displayed no thermal events from 25 to 1000 °C, which can be related to pigment melting.
