Three short term toxicity tests to freshwater fishes were available. One study was identified as the key study and reported a 96-hr LC50 value for rainbow trout (Oncorynchus mykiss) of 4.2 mg/L Diphenyl Oxide (DPO or Diphenyl Ether). Two laboratory studies and a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model estimation were available for short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrate Daphina magna. A key study reported 48 -hr EC50 value of 1.96 mg/L DPO. Two laboratory studies and a QSAR model estimation were available for short term toxicity to aquatic plant green algae

Psuedokirchnerilla subcapitata (formerly known as Selenastrum capricornutum). A key study reported 72 - hr ErC50 (growth rate) of 0.58 mg/L and EbC50 (biomass) of 0.405 mg/L using initial measured concentration. The results were recalculated using arithmetic mean measured concentration between initial and 72 hour measurement and the values were 72 - hr ErC50 (growth rate) of 0.455 mg/L and EbC50 (biomass) of 0.304 mg/L.

An additional study examined the possible genotoxic and teratogenic effects of DPO on two species of sea urchings (Paracentrotus lividus and Sphearechinus granularis). Also, the potential effect of diphenyl ether on activated sludge microorganisms maintained in an aerobic environment resulted in an EC50 of >100 mg/l (highest concentration tested).
